2. What is permitted development?

You can make certain types of minor changes to your house or business without needing to apply for planning permission.

The permitted development rights to a property can include single storey extensions to the rear and side of properties which meet a criteria of size limitations. Bear in mind that the permitted development rights which apply to many common projects for businesses and houses do not apply to flats, maisonettes or other buildings. In some areas of the country, known generally as 'designated areas', permitted development rights are more restricted.

If you are in a Conservation Area, you will need to apply for planning permission for certain types of work which do not need an application in other areas.

There are also different requirements if the property is a listed building. Where there is any doubt as to whether a development would be permitted development, advice fromour team will help you determine if any permitted development rights can be utilized.
