01: What Happens at Your First Meeting With an Architect?
If you've never worked with an architect before, that first meeting can feel like a bit of an unknown. Do you need to prepare something formal? Will you be judged on how clear your ideas are? Here's exactly what to expect when you get in touch with MO Architects.
However suits you best
We keep this flexible. Some clients prefer us to visit their home in person, so we can properly understand the space, the light, and how the house currently works. Others prefer to start with an online call, particularly if it's easier to fit around work or family commitments. Neither is a "better" option - it genuinely comes down to what works for you.
A conversation, not an interview
This first meeting isn't about testing your ideas or catching you out on not knowing the right terminology. It's a conversation. We'll talk through what you're hoping to achieve - more space, better light, a layout that finally works for how your family actually lives - and we'll ask questions about your site, any planning history, and whether there are constraints like conservation status to factor in.
Budget is part of this conversation too, and deliberately so. There's little point designing something beautiful that turns out to be well beyond what you're able or willing to spend. We'd rather have that conversation honestly and early, so everything that follows is grounded in reality.
What to bring — or not
You don't need anything formal. That said, if you've got photos of your home, a rough sketch of what you're imagining, or images you've saved from Pinterest, Houzz, or other architects' websites, all of that helps us understand your taste and direction faster. If we're visiting in person, simply showing us around and telling us how you actually use each space is often more useful than any amount of preparation.
How long it takes, and what it costs
The consultation itself typically takes around 45 minutes - enough time to properly understand your project without eating up your whole day. And to be clear: this first conversation is completely free, with no obligation to go any further.
What happens next
By the end of the conversation, you'll have a realistic sense of whether your idea is achievable, roughly what stages lie ahead, and a clearer idea of budget. If you decide to move forward, you'll typically receive a proposal outlining scope and fees within a few days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes — there's no charge and no obligation for the initial conversation, whether that's a home visit or an online call.
Do I need drawings or plans before contacting an architect?
No. A rough idea, a few photos, or even just a general sense of what's frustrating you about your current space is enough to start with.
Can the first meeting happen online instead of in person?
Yes — we're happy to do either a home visit or an online call, whichever suits your schedule better.
