Contemporary Extension
in West Bridgford, Nottingham
Project Overview
MO Architects were appointed to design a contemporary house extension and internal remodelling scheme for a residential property in West Bridgford, Nottingham.
The project focused on improving the way the home worked for modern family living, creating better connections between the kitchen, dining, living spaces and garden. The design approach balanced a clean contemporary extension with the character of the existing property, ensuring the new addition felt purposeful, practical and well integrated.
West Bridgford has a strong residential character, with many established streets, mature plots and family homes. Extensions in this area often need careful consideration of neighbouring amenity, scale, overlooking, daylight, materials and local planning expectations. MO Architects developed a design that responded to these constraints while helping the client unlock the potential of their home.

The Brief
The client wanted to create a brighter, more practical family home with improved living space and a stronger connection to the garden.
The existing layout did not fully support the way the family wanted to live. Like many older homes, the original arrangement created separation between rooms, limited natural light and restricted the relationship between the main living areas and the rear garden.
The brief was to design a contemporary extension that would provide generous open-plan space while also improving the overall flow of the house. The client wanted a home that felt lighter, more spacious and easier to use day to day, without losing the character and comfort of the original property.
The Planning Challenge
House extensions in West Bridgford often need to be carefully considered because of the area’s established residential character and the close relationship between neighbouring properties.
The design needed to improve the home without appearing overbearing, causing unacceptable overshadowing or creating privacy issues for adjacent properties. Scale, massing, boundary relationships, roof form and material choices were all important considerations.
MO Architects developed the proposal with planning considerations in mind from the outset, helping to shape a design that responded to the property, the site and the surrounding context.
Where residential extensions are close to neighbouring boundaries, early design judgement is important. A successful scheme needs to balance the client’s desire for more space with the need to protect neighbouring amenity and comply with local planning expectations.
The design introduced a contemporary extension that improved the connection between the home and garden while creating more flexible living accommodation.
Large areas of glazing were used to bring natural light into the new living spaces and open up views towards the garden. The internal layout was reconsidered to create a better relationship between the kitchen, dining and family areas, allowing the home to function more naturally for everyday use.
The architectural approach was contemporary but restrained. Rather than competing with the existing house, the extension was designed to complement it, using simple forms, considered proportions and a clear relationship between old and new.
The proposal was developed with careful attention to planning matters, including scale, overlooking, daylight, privacy, neighbouring amenity and the visual impact of the extension. This planning-led approach helped create a scheme that was both ambitious and realistic.
