Self Build Traditional Home in West Bridgford, Nottingham
Project Overview
MO Architects were appointed to design and deliver a contemporary self-build family home in West Bridgford, one of Nottingham's most established and sought-after residential areas.
The project involved a traditional-style self-build home designed to accommodate extended family living, combining classic external character with a contemporary internal layout. Set on a generous plot within an established residential street, the design needed to deliver a spacious modern home while sitting comfortably within its surroundings.
By combining architectural design, local character and a clear planning strategy, MO Architects developed a proposal that responded positively to the West Bridgford streetscape while meeting the client's brief for a flexible, multi-generational family home.

The Brief
The client wanted to create a spacious, traditional family home that made the most of a generous plot while still respecting the character of its established residential setting.
The brief centred on extended family living - generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas forming the social heart of the home, balanced by quieter retreat spaces suited to different generations. The aim was a practical, comfortable and future-ready home for the long term.
A key part of the brief was to combine a classic external appearance with a modern internal layout, delivering a home that felt timeless from the street while working fully for contemporary family life inside.
The Planning Challenge
The main challenge was delivering a generous self-build home within an established residential area where the relationship between new development and neighbouring properties is closely considered.
Rushcliffe Borough Council places strong emphasis on scale, massing and the impact of new development on adjoining homes. MO Architects assessed the character of the street and the proportions of neighbouring properties to shape a proposal that could be justified in planning terms.
The design also needed to demonstrate that a traditional self-build of this scale would sit comfortably within the West Bridgford streetscape and would not appear out of keeping with its established surroundings.
The architectural approach drew on familiar proportions, materials and detailing to create a timeless, traditional appearance that sits comfortably within the established West Bridgford streetscape.
Rather than producing a generic new-build house, MO Architects developed a design that paired a classic external character with a contemporary internal layout. The result is a home organised around generous, light-filled family spaces that support both everyday living and larger gatherings, with a strong relationship to the surrounding gardens.
The planning strategy was central to the project. Because West Bridgford is an established and closely considered residential area, MO Architects assessed the character of the street, the scale of neighbouring properties and the relationship between the new home and its surroundings to shape a proposal that responded positively to its context.
The Outcome
MO Architects helped secure planning permission for a generous traditional self-build home within an established West Bridgford residential setting.
The completed project delivers a spacious detached family home that combines classic external character with a contemporary internal layout, generous open-plan living and extensive landscaped gardens. It demonstrates how a well-considered design and a clear planning strategy can deliver an ambitious self-build while respecting the scale, character and neighbourly context of an established residential street.
