We have recently been appointed to support Fazilat Mosque with planning and listed building applications in West Bridgford, Nottingham.

The project relates to a former United Reformed Church building and includes a series of internal and external works to support its ongoing use as a place of worship. Due to the nature of the building, the proposals require a considered approach to both planning permission and heritage constraints.

Working Within a Historic Building

The adaptation of historic buildings for new community uses is increasingly common across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. However, these projects require a clear understanding of building significance and how proposed works may affect it.

For this project in West Bridgford, key considerations include:

  • Internal alterations to support religious use

  • External changes to improve access and functionality

  • Respecting the architectural character of the original building

  • Ensuring compliance with planning and heritage policy

Planning and Listed Building Considerations

The site falls within the administrative area of Rushcliffe and is assessed by Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Projects of this nature typically require:

  • Planning permission for external works and changes of use

  • Listed building consent where the building is protected

  • Supporting heritage statements and justification

  • Early engagement with conservation officers

A structured planning strategy is essential to manage risk and avoid delays.

Mosque Projects and Community Use

Places of worship play an important role in supporting local communities. The sensitive adaptation of existing buildings allows these uses to evolve while retaining their architectural value.

In Nottingham and West Bridgford, this approach helps:

  • Retain historic buildings in active use

  • Support growing and changing communities

  • Deliver practical, functional spaces for worship and gathering

A Planning-Led Approach

Our role is to guide the project through the planning process with clarity, balancing the operational needs of the mosque with the constraints of the building.

This includes:

  • Reviewing planning policy and site constraints

  • Preparing applications and supporting documents

  • Coordinating with the local authority

  • Providing clear advice throughout the process

Conclusion

This appointment reflects the importance of a clear, planning-led approach when working with historic buildings in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

We look forward to progressing the project for Fazilat Mosque and supporting a well-considered outcome in West Bridgford.
