The Brief

Our clients came to us with a dormer bungalow that had good bones but lacked presence. The layout worked reasonably well internally, but the exterior felt tired, the entrance lacked any sense of arrival, and the property didn't reflect the quality of the surrounding Keyworth streetscape. We were asked to lead a full renovation that would reset the character of the home from the ground up — not through a large extension, but through a considered redesign of the existing envelope.

Bringing Character Back to the Front Elevation

The heart of this renovation is the front elevation, and it's where the biggest design impact has been made.

An oak-framed entrance porch A new, substantial oak-framed gable porch now anchors the front of the house. Its exposed timber structure and pitched roof create a genuine focal point, drawing the eye and giving visitors a clear, welcoming sense of arrival that the original design was missing entirely. Paired with a rich, dark timber front door, the porch has become the defining feature of the whole renovation.

Reworked dormer windows Twin dormer windows have been refined and re-clad in matching stained timber to tie in with the new porch and front door, replacing what was a flatter, more generic roofline. This small but deliberate move ties the first-floor accommodation into the same material palette as the ground floor, giving the whole elevation a much more cohesive, considered feel.

Brick detailing and material honesty Rather than rendering over the original brickwork, we chose to work with it — refreshing pointing and detailing to let the brick's natural texture and colour do the work. This keeps the renovation grounded and in keeping with the traditional character of the Selby Lane streetscape, while the warm brick tones set off the oak porch and dormer cladding beautifully.

Practical Improvements That Support the Design

A renovation like this isn't just about visual character — it needed to work hard practically too:

• Widened, resurfaced driveway in a warm-toned block paving, offering generous off-street parking and turning space, and framing the approach to the new porch.

• Double garage retained and integrated into the overall composition, with roller shutter doors that complement rather than compete with the new brickwork and timber detailing.

• Soft landscaping and mature hedging either side of the driveway, preserving privacy from the road while softening the hard landscaping.
